UCSC strives to embrace diversity in all its forms; it strives to be an inclusive community that fosters an open, enlightened & productive environment.

Involves serving as the technical administrator for hardware, operating systems, and network management. Plans and coordinates the installation, configuration and testing of hardware and software components. Work may involve central or departmental computer systems and networks. Includes web systems administration.

The Baskin School of Engineering (BSOE) FreeBSD & File Services Administrator plays an essential role in the delivery of services to BSOE faculty, staff and students. The BSOE relies heavily on FreeBSD for our large file servers. We currently manage over 1PB of ZFS file systems hosted by FreeBSD servers and shared via Samba and NFS. Additionally, we use FreeBSD for many of our infrastructure servers, such as WWW, MySQL and LDAP. This position provides support on these systems to other IT staff and end users, and is responsible for determining specifications for new hardware, software and services in support of these functions. This position is responsible for enforcing policy and security within these systems.

Academic Divisional Computing is comprised of six regionally distributed teams, embedded in five academic divisions and the Silicon Valley Center. This structure recognizes that the intellectual diversity represented within our faculty is best served by services that are locally optimized and adaptive to changing needs. By standardizing on commonalities, we develop right-sized, right-priced IT services that enable growth in a resource-constrained environment. The outcome provides an aggregated description of local IT support and services that can be easily accessed by faculty and reviewed by decision-makers to inform shared investment in commonly understood requirements across the disciplines.
The position works closely with the BSOE Divisional Liaison/Computing Director to understand the division’s FreeBSD and file service requirements, and to plan, coordinate, and manage the delivery of hardware, software and services to meet those needs. Successful candidates will demonstrate both breadth and depth in expertise related to FreeBSD system administration and complex UNIX file systems.
